The firm was founded a century ago by Frederick J. Slater and was developed by Walter Wingfield from 1937 onwards, being joined by his son in 1976.

John Wingfield became a partner in 1980, expanding the firm rapidly with the arrival of Roland Givans and Peter Newsam from national and medium-sized firms in 1983 and 1988. They later became partners in 1988 and 1990 respectively.

At the start of 1995 the firm took another step forward, merging with Norman Hemmingfield & Co., introducing Derek Hemmingfield as a partner with a further 12 members added to the team. The new firm, to be known as Wingfield Slater Hemmingfield, shared common goals and brought together high levels of expertise and commitment to adding value to our clients.

During 2002 and the early part of 2003 the partners worked on initiatives to deliver improved client services and sustained growth. As one of a series of measures, we reverted to the Wingfield Slater name, aiming for consistency in our approach across the firm and in our contacts with the Sheffield business community as a whole.

In February 2007 the firm joined the UHY Hacker Young Group. The Partners felt that it was a great honour for us to have been selected to represent UHY in South Yorkshire and a testimony to our long-standing commitment to quality and client service.

As part of this move, we changed our name to UHY Wingfield Slater.  The name change and new corporate identity will link us to the Group’s other member firms visually and will emphasise the strength of the national network.  We feel that this move will be good for both ourselves and our clients.  The UHY Hacker Young Group currently has 80 partners and over 400 staff, working in 18 other locations across the UK.  The Group also has a strong reputation for providing personal and prompt partner-led services to its clients, which fits well with our approach at UHY Wingfield Slater.
