Press Release

April 2007: Using your blackberry could lead to a tax penalty, warns UHY Wingfield Slater

The Blackberry is the “must have” business accessory … but the user could end up paying more tax, warns UHY Wingfield Slater, one of Sheffield’s leading accountants and business advisers.

Business people use the portable Blackberry to pick up and send emails on the move. But the taxman has cottoned on to the fact that the new generation Blackberry has functions which make it more like a computer than a mobile phone.

“The result of this is that anyone receiving a replacement Blackberry, or a new one, after April 6 could be subject to a benefit-in-kind tax charge,” warns UHY Wingfield Slater partner Peter Newsam.

To avoid the charge, users will have to demonstrate that their personal use of their Blackberry is insignificant. More information is available in UHY Wingfield Slater’s Financial Monitor advisory newsletter which is emailed to UHY Wingfield Slater clients and is also available for anyone to download from its website: www.UHY-wingfieldslater.com .

The newsletter also contains business advice ranging from end of year tax planning for individuals and partnerships to tax liability on company vans. It also looks in detail at new construction industry schemes coming into operation in April covering contractors’ monthly returns.
